One. Can large-sized core boards be used as stair treads?
It is not recommended to use large-span boards as individual steps for staircases.
Because large-span panels are not abrasion-resistant, using them as the sole material for staircase treads can lead to premature wear and tear, significantly reducing their lifespan.
However, large-core boards can be used as the substrate for stair treads. A second layer of tread board should then be added, which can be custom-made from solid wood or tongue-and-groove boards. When preparing the substrate, use wood battens or angle steel to create a frame, then fix the boards using nails or screws. Finally, install the tread panels. The panels can also be made from composite wood flooring or even carpet, but ensure adequate slip resistance.
Two. How to build stairs using plywood
In most cases, plywood is not used directly for stair construction, but rather as a base for the stairs.
When installing plywood, ensure that the step height and width are consistent. Use foam adhesive to adjust any discrepancies in height or width. After applying the adhesive, prime the surface before proceeding with the installation of the plywood.
Due to the excellent screw-holding capacity, high strength, and characteristics such as stiffness, sound absorption, and thermal insulation, as well as the low moisture content (10-13%) of particleboard, it is easy to process and is used for furniture, doors, windows, partitions, false walls, radiators, and curtain boxes. Furthermore, particleboard, with its internal solid wood strips, requires minimal processing equipment, making it convenient for on-site construction.
Therefore, using plywood for staircase construction offers the following advantages: strong and secure fixation, excellent flatness, firm footing, and long-lasting durability.
