One、What materials are used for making DIY tatami mats?
1、Solid wood panels
Wood used for tatami beds includes pine, cedar, and oak. Pine offers a good balance of hardness and price, making it a popular choice for tatami construction. Oak also provides a comfortable feel, but its higher price makes it suitable for those with larger budgets. Cedar, while inexpensive, is too soft and is not recommended for use in tatami.

2、Solid wood particle board
The solid wood particle board has excellent nail holding capacity, allowing for repeated and multiple nailing, including both round nails and screw nails. These boards exhibit significantly better workability compared to particleboard. The solid wood particle board has a high density and larger wood fiber granules, preserving more of the natural wood characteristics. It also exhibits minimal warping and deformation, excellent dimensional stability, high strength, and good resistance to bending.
3、Eco-board
Ecological boards can be recycled and are non-combustible, free from harmful substances such as formaldehyde and toluene, and possess excellent waterproofing, anticorrosion, insectproofing, and antifungal properties. Furthermore, the boards can be easily matched in color, and installation is very simple, eliminating the need for painting.
II. Steps for constructing a wooden platform bed.
1、Material selection and dimension measurement
For wooden flooring, the first step is to select the materials and measure the dimensions. The flooring design should be finalized, and if cabinets or bookshelves are to be installed next to the flooring, their dimensions should also be measured. The flooring base can then be made from materials such as plywood, pine, or rubber wood.
2、Determine the floor specifications
The subfloor for tatami mats also has specific dimensions, typically with a height of around 420mm. The floor itself is 20mm high. Currently, the most commonly used tatami mat dimensions are: length not exceeding 2100mm and width not exceeding 800mm.
3、Constructing the box structure
Next, we will begin constructing the platform for the tatami mats. The size of the platform should be determined based on the area of your room. We also need to ensure the platform's load-bearing capacity, so the platform's width should ideally be between 50 and 80cm. Then, we can create platforms of different sizes based on the size of the platform. The exterior of the platform can be designed with drawers, making it more convenient to use.
4、Connecting the enclosure
After assembling the enclosure, begin connecting the components. Secure the position of each enclosure and then secure the connection between the enclosures and the wall. Subsequently, fabricate the enclosure cover and desired aesthetic design according to the specified dimensions, while also performing grinding and polishing.
5、Tatami installation
once the cabinet connections are complete, the tatami platform is finished. Then, we can apply paint and place the tatami mat, which completes the installation. If an electric lifting platform is desired, it is necessary to install a power supply under the platform and create an outlet.
