One, how many times should the putty powder be applied before painting?
Normally, this requires three coats. The first coat of putty serves to prime and level the wall surface. The second coat of putty also levels the wall surface; after applying two coats of putty, the wall surface is already relatively smooth. The third coat of putty is used for localized leveling.
There are also cases where two coats are applied, such as when there is a tight deadline or when using experienced tradespeople. If the first coat is applied smoothly, a second coat can be used to address any minor imperfections.
Note: The number of times you apply the putty powder is not necessarily the more, the more is not better. If the putty powder is too thick, it is easy to produce cracks. Also, before applying the first coat, make sure the primer is completely dry. And before applying the second coat, make sure the first coat of putty powder is completely dry. Otherwise, it is easy to cause the putty powder to bulge, requiring rework.
II. important Considerations for Applying Putty Powder on Walls
1、Before applying putty powder, it is essential to ensure that the wall surface is clean. If the substrate surface has not been properly cleaned of loose particles, applying putty powder directly can lead to poor adhesion and the formation of "two-layer" phenomenon, resulting in detachment and air bubble formation.
2. Do not apply ready-mixed putty paste in winter when it may freeze, as the water in the putty paste will expand and freeze upon contact with the substrate, weakening the putty and reducing its protective function.
3. It is not recommended to apply ready-mixed putty paste on freshly mixed cement mortar or on the surface of freshly demolded adhesive, even though putty powder has good breathability. However, its airtightness is also relatively high in humid conditions. The putty layer is susceptible to forming bubbles under the pressure of moisture, leading to poor bonding with the substrate and damaging its performance. Furthermore, when exposed to moisture, it can expand and peel off.
4、The thickness of the putty application should be controlled between 0.5mm and 1mm. Applying too thinly can cause the putty to powder; applying too thickly can lead to cracking.
