Does seashell powder contain formaldehyde?
Mother-of-pearl powder is free of formaldehyde and comprises a variety of materials, including finely ground shells of clams, oysters, mussels, etc., all of which are collectively referred to as mother-of-pearl powder. It is a grayish or off-white powdery material, primarily composed of calcium carbonate. High-quality mother-of-pearl powder has a calcium content of 95% or more, and also contains small amounts of protein, phosphorus, amino acids, and polysaccharides.
Shell powder is widely used in home renovation. It is free of heavy metals and does not release harmful gases such as formaldehyde, and small amounts are non-toxic. Inhalation does not damage the respiratory system. Therefore, it is a very environmentally friendly renovation material. New houses renovated with it can be immediately inhabited without waiting.

Can seashell powder paint remove formaldehyde?
1- Adhesion
Mother-of-pearl powder has a porous structure, with most pore radii distributed between 20~70nm. The specific surface area of mother-of-pearl powder coatings is 2.5 times that of activated carbon, and the half-width of most pores is more than 5 times that of activated carbon. Therefore, it can effectively absorb indoor formaldehyde and bacteria.
2- Decomposition
Formaldehyde is the smallest oxygen-containing organic compound with high reactivity. It can react with molecules containing -OH (hydroxyl), -SH (thiol), and -NH2 (amino) groups through nucleophilic addition, introducing a methylene group (-CH2-), which cross-links free molecular chains and eliminates their original properties. When formaldehyde reacts with CaCO3 and Ca(OH)2 in seashell powder, it decomposes into carbon dioxide and water, completely degrading formaldehyde and purifying indoor air, achieving formaldehyde removal rates of 80% or higher.
The porous double-helix structure of seashell powder effectively removes free formaldehyde, benzene, ammonia, and other harmful substances from the air, as well as odors caused by pets, smoking, and garbage. Using seashell powder for interior decoration not only does not pollute the indoor air, but also effectively purifies air pollution caused by other decorative materials, creating a fresher, greener, healthier, and more comfortable indoor environment.
