A significant drawback of particleboard is its tendency to warp and deform. This warping and deformation not only affects the aesthetic appearance and reduces the quality of the product, but also creates numerous inconveniences for sanding and further processing. Therefore, effectively addressing the issue of warping and deformation in particleboard is crucial. This warping and deformation is caused by various factors.
Two. What are the reasons for the deformation of particleboard?
(1) Issues related to the installation of panel materials
1. Causes
If irregularities appear on the surface of the steel plate after laying, the resulting steel plate will exhibit an asymmetric structure after heat forming. This can lead to significant density differences and increased internal stresses within the plate, ultimately causing warping and deformation.
2、Solution
To ensure the dimensional stability of the particleboard, when laying the blank, the following principles should be followed: the wood chips on both sides of the symmetrical center of the particleboard should be selected from materials with similar species, thickness, density, and size. When setting the laying process parameters, the proportion of the upper surface layer of wood chips should be appropriately increased to compensate for losses during transportation, ensuring that the laid blank has a uniform thickness and a smooth surface.
(ii) Moisture content issues in the boards.

In the production of particleboard, if the particleboard's core layer exhibits uneven drying or uneven resin application, it can lead to an unstable moisture content in the core layer, resulting in warping and deformation of the board.
2、Solution
To maintain a stable moisture content in the wood chips after application, it is recommended to use raw materials with similar moisture content, ensuring the surface of the wood remains smooth and even, and that the applied adhesive is applied uniformly and consistently. Additionally, when drying the wood chips, it is important to ensure that the drying machine's outlet temperature and the moisture content of the exiting wood chips meet the required process specifications.
(Three) Hot Pressing Process Issues
1. Causes
During hot pressing, heat transfer occurs from the core to the surface, resulting in a temperature gradient from high to low. Therefore, if the upper and lower pressing plates are at the same temperature under the same pressure, the two surfaces of the pressing plate will have inconsistent heat transfer, leading to inconsistent curing strength of the glue on the two surfaces of the particleboard, causing uneven internal stress, and ultimately causing the particleboard to warp and deform.
2、Solution
Correctly master the hot pressing process and the change in pressing temperature. According to the actual production situation, adjust the temperature of the pressing plate so that the upper and lower surfaces of theRaw material are solidified to the same extent and have similar strength, and avoid generating different internal stresses. In addition, theRaw material can be preheated with high-frequency heating and steam treatment before hot pressing to increase the temperature of the core layer, which can make the cross-section density of theRaw material tend to be uniform.
(iv) Surface sanding issues

The typical density distribution of particleboard sections resembles a "saddle shape." If the sanding amount on the top and bottom surfaces is inconsistent, the density curve of the section along the thickness direction after sanding will become asymmetrical, resulting in significant deviations in the peak values on the top and bottom surfaces, which can cause the board to warp and deform.

- During hot pressing, the thickness tolerance of the sheet should be controlled.- When sanding, try to ensure that the sanding amount on the top and bottom surfaces is consistent, resulting in a symmetrical density curve profile in the sheet thickness direction after sanding.- This ensures uniform sheet thickness and a smooth, flat surface.
(V) Issues related to the storage of timber.
1、Causes
If the storage method is not appropriate, even if the produced particleboard is flat, the board may also exhibit varying degrees of warping and distortion. Uneven ground conditions, improper spacing between stacks, or inconsistent stacking positions can cause the boards to be subjected to uneven loads during storage, leading to deformation.
2、Solution
When storing particleboard, manufactured panels must be stacked neatly and should not be placed in humid environments. They should be stored in a dry, well-ventilated area, maintaining a neat and even stack with aligned corners and a flat, heavy object on top to prevent deformation.
Although there are many factors that can cause the warping and deformation of particleboard, the key factor is the balance of forces within the board. To effectively prevent warping and deformation of particleboard, particleboard manufacturers should carefully analyze the causes of the problem and implement targeted and effective measures to avoid such occurrences.
